Guide To Fixed Mobile Working

The ability to collaborate, make the right decisions, and serve customers ‘in the moment’ needs to be simple.

We have now reached the inflection point at which businesses are looking beyond the considerable cost savings presented by IP-based communications, to the productivity benefits, improved customer interaction and other business process improvements it can offer. The convergence of fixed and mobile communications is one such area for which we have found great customer interest for solutions that provide workers with advanced IPbased features from their mobile devices and remote locations.

The remote worker has never had it so good in terms of the ability to utilise the latest in IP technology whilst in the office, yet also benefit from wireless connectivity and the receiving of emails ‘pushed’ to them whilst on the move, all on the same device.

Whilst IP, Wi-Fi and remote email technologies have existed in isolation for quite some time, it has only been recently that they have been ‘converged’ to provide them the same set of tools whilst on the move as they would be accustomed to within the office environment.

Now, a number of telephone systems enable mobile phones such as the Nokia E series devices to become part of the wireless telephone network when in the office and revert back to a business optimised mobile phone when out of the office.

This effectively makes the device a wireless extension whilst out of the office and coupled with the latest Nokia Intellisync software, you now have ‘push email’. So whether remote workers use their device whilst in or out of the office, it can become part of the telephone system, they benefit from the best least-cost routing and have access to their email at all times.

Additionally, remote workers no longer need a desk-based telephone, saving on the hardware, cabling and maintenance costs.

The fixed mobile office solution aggregates products, technologies and services from the cellular, fixed line and IT worlds.

Mobile Extension

Traditionally enterprise cell phone users have had exceptional mobility but little or no participation in enterprise communication services. In fact, other than the ability to forward calls to a cell phone, enterprise phones and cell phones have been two separate islands of communications.

Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) unites these two domains to enable mobile workers to receive all of their calls regardless of their location or telephony device.

The way in which FMC applications work varies but a typical example would be: any telephone including a cell phone can be linked to the user’s desk phone and this will act as an extension of the corporate PBX, this is known as ‘twinning’.

The user is always accessible whether in the office, at home or on the road. The result is that users avoid missed calls and gain personal productivity. Employees can be more efficient and spend less time chasing voice mail and playing voice mail tag.

Users have one common set of utilities inside and outside of the office to establish everyday communications functions such as the ability to put a caller on hold or to transfer the call.

It has also become clear that the enterprise is increasingly concerned about the need to contain cell phone costs. Studies now suggest that almost 2/3s of an enterprise’s cell phone calls are made in the office or at home. FMC applications help to reduce these costs by enabling calls that were answered in the office or home on a cell phone to be handed back to the desk phone quickly and easily.
