Guide To Wireless (WiFi) Offices

Wireless connectivity won’t do away with all those cables sitting behind your desk – just a few, but it will offer other benefits such as using the network for voice as well as data.

Wireless PCs, laptops and other devices are being increasingly used in both business and the home. The reason for this marked trend is that wireless is relatively easy and cheap to deploy and is often simpler to manage than standard wired connections.

Using wireless, new PCs or laptops can be added without the difficulty and cost of wiring them in. In the business world, smaller companies find that wireless computing frees them from the conventional restrictions of cabling. The whole office space becomes much more flexible and easy to rearrange.

Wireless (WiFi) Offices
Wi-Fi – connect to any public network

Employees can still connect to the Internet, send and receive emails, and do all tasks they need to do. Moreover, they can do all this with greatly increased mobility. It’s a very attractive proposition.

For enterprises, wireless provides laptop users with convenience and mobility. Corporate workers find it very tempting to be able to move around the office or between company offices and connect into the network via a wireless laptop, wherever they happen to be. It can increase productivity and is very convenient. It is, however, often done by an individual without the knowledge of IT or management - sometimes called ‘rogue access’.

When they’re out of the office, executives can work from one of the many wireless ‘hotspots’ springing up in places such as Starbucks, hotel chains or airports. For home users, wireless laptops let you connect to the Internet, without being physically tied to a connection point. More than one user can easily connect up from different locations in the house and you can have privacy from other family members when you need it. And, of course, you can easily connect to the office.

Increasingly today businesses are also recognising that their Wi-Fi networks can be put to wider use. In hotels for example, many Wi-Fi users have come to realise that they can do much more with their network than just charge a guest £5.00 for an hour or two of Internet access. They can run phones on it, wireless card readers and till points as well and with Trapeze Networks all these are possible and easy to deploy.

Wi-Fi

What is it? Wi-Fi, or Wireless Fidelity, is freedom: it allows you to connect to the Internet from anywhere in your home, a bed in a hotel room or a conference room at work without wires. How? Wi-Fi is a wireless technology like a cell phone. Wi-Fienabled computers can send and receive data indoors and out; anywhere within the range of a base station.

Why have it? Firstly, base stations are being commercially fitted everywhere; Hotel lobbies, airport lounges, coffee shops, etc. Why? So users with Wi-Fienabled devices can sit down and log on to the Internet or send and receive email. Organisations such as BT Openzone will sell ‘access’ to these so called ‘hot spots’ on a time-related charge.

Secondly, Wi-Fi is easy to install in either the office or the home and removes the need for additional wiring points to be installed so users are up and running quickly and not restricted to working near a spare fixed network point.

Other Considerations: Look for the Wi- Fi CERTIFIED logo on a product before you buy it. The Wi-Fi certified logo is your assurance that the product has met rigorous interoperability testing requirements to assure products from different vendors will work together.
